Headstone Dedication Ceremony Honoring Anna (Smalley) Donaldson
When: Sunday, June 9, 2024
Time: 12pm-4pm
Location: Evergreen Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203 [Map]
The family of Mrs. Anna (Smalley) Donaldson (1856-1904) joined with friends and community to commemorate Anna's life and the legacy of the Pacific Northwest Black Pioneers at a headstone dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Evergreen Cemetery in Everett, Washington.
Anna was born in 1856 in Alabama, and moved from the deep South to Roslyn, Washington, with her husband Jessee and 7 children in 1904, as part of recruitment efforts to attract African American families to break white coal miners’ strikes. The recruitment efforts were led by James Shepperson, who recruited hundreds of African Americans from across the country. In the 1900 census, nearly ¼ of Roslyn’s population identified as Black, which was unique for the Pacific Northwest. Anna was a leader in Roslyn’s Mt. Zion Baptist church, traveled to Cincinnati as a delegate for a national Baptist convention, and volunteered with the Home Foreign Mission Circle, in addition to raising her children. She unfortunately passed on from tuberculosis in 1904.
